A Glimpse into the History of Ballroom Dancing

Ballroom dancing has a storied past, evolving from historical social dances into the refined and expressive forms we see today. Originating in 17th and 18th century Europe, ballroom dancing gained prominence in European courts and quickly spread as a popular pastime.

Much of the early ballroom dances were adapted from folk traditions. However, as high society parties and royal events gained prominence, dancing took on a more refined role in these events. For example, at royal assemblies, dancers had to face the host during their routine, especially if it were a king or queen, prince or princess.

As time progressed, different styles of dancing spread into social balls and limited invitation events, where dancers would promenade together in circles or squares.

The etiquette of these events was very detailed, and following proper protocol and cues was expected behavior for both women and men. You may have enjoyed reading about these special events having been portrayed in famous novels by Jane Austen, Henry James, and other popular authors' stories.

Benefits of Ballroom Dancing

Ballroom dancing offers many physical, mental, and social benefits. From enhanced cognitive health to improved posture and coordination, the advantages of ballroom dancing extend far beyond the dance floor.

In addition to engaging both body and mind, ballroom dancing fosters a sense of community, boosts self-confidence, and provides a satisfying outlet for self-expression.

One of the greatest benefits that we see with ballroom dancing at SouL Dance is the spectrum of ages and variety of personalities who enjoy dancing together. It truly brings people together with a common purpose, even if individual pursuits and goals may vary.

“Whatever genuinely brings people together in a positive and heartfelt way is a powerful force for good. Nothing of real worth is ever gained by force, and nothing of substance is ever lost by listening to our higher self.”

After introductions, the instructor will show you the main dance elements to evaluate your skill level. You’ll get to explore some basic steps and the timing of a few dances. At the end of the lesson, we’ll recommend a customized dance program specifically for you.

Pro Tip: It takes more than one lesson to become a competent dancer. Keep your expectations realistic, and enjoy the process!

Private lessons allow for a custom pace and greater detail of guidance and communication. Expect a supportive and encouraging atmosphere where questions and concerns are welcome.

What to Bring to Your Private Ballroom Lesson

Dance lessons can run the spectrum from very slow and methodical movements to very complex and challenging acrobatics. What you bring will depend upon your skill level.

For beginners, we recommend something comfortable. Bring shoes with non-marking soles, and clothes that offer flexibility of movement. Perfumes and colognes should be kept to a minimum, as you'll be in close contact with your dance partner/instructor.

As you progress in your dance journey, you may want to explore purchasing dance shoes, which offer better floor contact for turns, spins, and other dance techniques.
